THE EVENING TIMES New Motor Vehicle Law Gives Boyle a Vacation Until Signs Are Lighted Motorcycle Policeman Dana Boyle was off duty last night as the result of the interpretation of the new motor vehicle law of New York State, published in Tuesday's papers. The law went into effect July 30 and according to the interpretation published yesterday, it provides that all speed limit signs at the intersection of the corporation lines must be illuminated at night. The law also provides that such signs must be placed at all points where a street and corporation line intersect each other and that they must be not more than eight nor less than six feet in height and the letters must be six inches or more in height.

Points in this village at which the law requires signs to be placed are on Elmira, Loder, Fulton streets, Pennsylvania avenue, Spaulding street, Cayuta avenue, East Chemung street, North Chemung street, Waverly street, Pine street and West Chemung street. The signs already in use comply with the new law as to measurements and signs are already standing at most of these points. Electricity is already available at all points for illuminating the signs with the exception of East Chemung street, West Chemung street and North Chemung street, and Village President VanNorstran stated Tuesday that he hoped lights would be in place at those points by Wednesday night. The question of the expense of the new lights will have to be considered at the next meeting of the village board. There are eleven lights to maintain at the eleven intersections and the street lights in use at present cost the village $48 a year for each light.

It is hoped, however, that a smaller light can be used for these signs. The hen that roosted high and didn't cluck escaped the fox. That wasn't wholly luck.
